Central Oregon law enforcement agencies are teaming up again with youth outreach programs and Walmart to make the holidays a little brighter for some kids who are less fortunate. This year, another local agency is joining in.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office is hosting its annual Shop with a Cop this week. They took kids shopping at the Redmond Walmart Tuesday and the Bend Walmart on Wednesday. They’ll do another round at the Bend Walmart Thursday.

Shop with a Cop is completely funded by donations from our community. Many businesses, organizations, and individual citizens donate money to the program. No tax dollars are spent on this program. In addition to shopping for the students, Shop with a Cop provides a Christmas meal for participating families.  We apply 100% of community donations to this local program,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Participating students are referred by the Family Access Network (FAN) advocate for the schools within Deschutes County. Additional students are referred via the Central Oregon Partnership for Youth (COPY) program, which provides positive mentoring for children of incarcerated parents.”

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will hold its first-ever Shop with a Cop event Thursday at the Redmond Walmart.
