Oregon mistakenly issues more than $1M in COVID food benefits — again

For the second time in two years, the state of Oregon has to track down more than $1 million of COVID-19 pandemic-era food benefits given to the wrong students.

Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) said Friday it has recovered $1.32 million of unused Pandemic-EBT (P-EBT) federal benefits that were mistakenly issued to about 3,700 students. In all, about $1.46 million was mistakenly issued.

ODHS is now working to notify the families involved. Those who did use the benefits won’t be punished.

The agency says the mistake was due to an error made by Oregon’s P-EBT vendor that caused benefits to be incorrectly issued to some of the same students who incorrectly received benefits in 2021. In that instance, ODHS mistakenly issued $8 million of food benefits to ineligible students.
