Klamath County Search and Rescue (SAR) saved three lost hikers in the Sky Lakes Wilderness last Tuesday, the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office said (KCSO).

The hikers became lost once cell phone service cut out and their map system would not update, the sheriff’s office said. Family members shared the GPS coordinates of the hikers with SAR and a group of searchers was deployed to the area.

Searchers received a text from the lost hikers a few hours into the search and determined the missing group was on the Pumice Creek trail on the side of Goose Egg Mountain, KCSO said. The search group headed to the new location, found the lost hikers and reunited them with family members.

SAR encourages people to use GPS-based mapping systems rather than cellular devices in remote areas. The sheriff’s office says large areas of Klamath County does not have cell phone coverage.
