Deschutes County Search and Rescue helped a family of five get out safely after their side-by-side utility terrain vehicle got stuck in the snow Sunday.
A woman called 911 just after 6:00 p.m. to say her husband, two children, niece and niece’s boyfriend were all stuck on 4602 Rd. near Triangle Hill west of Bend, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office said. She said her family was not injured, but that it was getting dark and the weather was coming in.
The woman was trading text messages with her family to help searchers zero in on their position since cell service was spotty, but two GPS coordinates were determined to help find their location.
The husband also said he had left the others to hike down the mountain near Tumalo Falls to get help and cell reception, the sheriff’s office said.
The search and rescue team went out at 7:30 p.m. and found the family about an hour later. They dug out the UTV, which was able to be driven out.
