Dick Tobiason, a well-known name in the Central Oregon veteran community, was honored Wednesday by the Deschutes County Board of Commissioners.

Tobiason regularly works with the veterans, recognizing them for their service and organizing ceremonies to pay tribute to those who have passed away. He also works to provide resources to homeless veterans.

“This is the week and this is a time to thank a veteran. And especially you, Dick, for all that you do for our community,” Commissioner Patti Adair said as the board recognized Tobiason and presented him with a plaque.

In May, Central Oregon Daily News profiled Tobiason for his efforts to have Highway 20 named the National Medal of Honor Highway. Highway 20 runs coast-to-coast from Oregon to Massachusetts.

Massachusetts became the 12th and final state to declare Highway 20 a state Medal of Honor Highway in August. Tobiason has helped interested parties in all 12 states write the bills that have allowed those laws to be passed.

Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., and Representatives Lori-Chavez-DeRemer and Cliff Bentz, R-Ore. have introduced legislation in Congress to designate the entire 3,365 miles of Highway 20 as the National Medal of Honor Highway.
