BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — Kim Shoop’s Tuesday morning was a bit different from normal, but ended in heart-warming fashion.

About a month ago, a duck had laid 10 eggs near Shoop’s driveway in Bend.

“Every time I walked out to the car, I’d go, ‘Hi, momma duck!’ And I was thinking maybe she would recognize my voice,” Shoop told NewsChannel 21.

Tuesday morning, Shoop’s daughter noticed that all of the eggs had hatched, but the ducklings did not get far.

“My daughter saw the momma duck quacking really loudly over a storm grate,” Shoop said.

Shoop, her husband and their neighbors, Barbara Praus and Tom Brough, scooped out all the babies with an aquarium fish net, then walked to a nearby canal, with mom in tow, to put the ducklings in water.

“She was talking to her babies, and her babies were talking to her, and we were talking to her, saying, ‘Come on momma, you can do it! A little further! Come on,'” Praus recalled.

Brough said he had a little extra motivation to save the ducklings too.

“I’ve always been a fan of the Oregon Ducks. So when there was a duck in need, we answered the call,” Brough said with a smile.
